Case Study 1 - Business Interruption
FALS team computed lost profits of a skating complex that resulted from repeated shutdowns due to equipment failures. A comparable complex in another state was used as a model for the opening and start-up activity trends – adjustments (based upon market research) were required for geographical and regional economic variations between the complexes.
Case Study 2 - Professional Liability
Ms. Wanda Lorenz, partner at LGT, was engaged as a consultant and courtroom witness for a class action plaintiff’s lawsuit involving accountant’s malpractice in the savings and loan industry. Specific issues included recording of real estate transactions (Financial Accounting Standard No. 66 "Accounting for Sales of Real Estate") and opinion shopping surrounding the application of Statement on Auditing Standard No. 50 "Reports on the Application of Accounting Principles."
Case Study 3 – Forensic Accounting /Investigation
Investigation involved analysis and critique of gross receipts at a nightclub subject to a percentage rental lease clause. Our work included covert surveillance, interface with Alcoholic Beverage Commission, document review (register tapes, daily cash activity reports, bank statements, deposit slips and cancelled checks). With our report, the client was able to sell the pad-site and building at a favorable price.
Case Study 4 – Embezzlement
Investigated suspected fraud and misconduct by an employee/owner. Our work included interviews and review of register tapes, cash receipts journal, bank statements, cancelled checks, and vendor invoice files. This work resulted in the discovery of theft of inventory, diversion of cash receipts, and disbursement of cash for personal purposes.
